Wildcat of the Week: University Campus

Name: Melissa Miller
Educational Background: Bachelor of Science (BS) - Mathematics Education from Appalachian State University; Master of Education (M.Ed) - Curriculum and Supervision from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte; Master of Education (M.Ed) - Curriculum and Assessment from Walden University
Reason for working in Education: To make a difference! I was a horrible math student all through school and it wasn’t until college that I realized I really was not a mathematics idiot. Mathematics is developmental AND the best way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics. I knew right then and there that I wanted to teach math so that I could help students to be successful in mathematics BEFORE graduating so that they could have as many opportunities and advantages as possible going into college and in preparing for their futures.
Reason for working at SLES: I absolutely feel in love with SLES, in fact I found myself comparing every school that I interviewed with to SLES and none measured up. SLES felt like home and when you spend as much time at work as teacher’s do what could be better than working in an environment that feels like family.
# years at SLES: First year at SLES, 23rd year in Education
Position at SLES: Mathematics Teacher
Favorite thing about SLES: The students
Favorite Book: I truly could not pick just one. I love to read! Two of my favorite authors are Barbara Kingslover and Pat Conroy.
Favorite Movie: Breakfast at Tiffany’s... Love Audrey Hepburn & wanted to grow up to be her when I was little girl!
Favorite Food: Since moving to Mobile my “favorite food” has now become “foods” and I am not sure that I could choose just one, but if I had to pick Fried Crab Claws would most definitely be at the top of the list.
Hobbies: Running, Reading, Cooking, anything outside
